About OpenFront

OpenFront is an open-source browser strategy game in the spirit of territory games like Territorial.io, played on real maps such as Europe, the Gulf of Mexico or the whole world. You start with a small patch of land and grow it by attacking neutral ground and neighbours, while building cities, ports, defence posts and missile silos. Alliances, betrayals and naval invasions decide who ends up ruling the map, and matches with dozens of players last only a few minutes.

OpenFront in the browser

openfront.io is the game's own site, and its code is public on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 licence. You get a random name and can play straight away as a guest: single player against bots, a tutorial, public lobbies that start every couple of minutes, private rooms and ranked matches. Signing in is optional, and there is an optional store; a Steam version is also available. It works on desktop and mobile browsers.

How to play OpenFront online

  1. Use a desktop browser (Chrome or Edge works best).
  2. Click “Play now”. The game opens in a new tab on the original project's site.
  3. Wait for the first load; big games can download hundreds of MB.
  4. Click inside the game to capture the mouse. Press Esc to release it.

⚠ Never download a launcher or .exe from a browser game page.

Tips for OpenFront

  • Do the tutorial first; it explains attacks, boats and buildings in a few minutes.
  • Expand into neutral land early before fighting other players.
  • Make alliances with neighbours so you only fight on one front.
  • Build defence posts on borders you can't afford to lose.

Can I play OpenFront online for free?

Yes. OpenFront.io opens in a browser tab on the project's own site, with no download and no sign-up.

Do I need to install OpenFront?

No. Everything runs inside the browser tab. Close the tab and nothing stays on your computer apart from the browser cache.

Does OpenFront work on a phone or Chromebook?

Why is OpenFront not loading?

Fan-made browser ports often run on small servers. Wait a minute and refresh, use Chrome or Edge on a desktop, close other heavy tabs, and make sure no extension is blocking the page.

Yes. The browser version is free and open source. Signing in and the store are optional.

Can I practise before playing online?

Yes. There is a tutorial and a single-player mode against bots on the same maps.
